Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, rental car companies deduced that Americans wouldn't be traveling much. They sold off large portions of their fleets to help make ends meet and avoid the expense of maintaining cars no one wanted.

The price rises are mainly caused by car rental companies having sold off much of their stock of vehicles during the pandemic as demand collapsed. Now, with people taking holidays again, they are trying to rebuild their fleets, but a global shortage of semi-conductors means they are paying more for new vehicles.

Rental-car companies and analysts say they expect shortages to continue in the coming months due to the global chip shortage and other supply-chain constraints. With demand for rental cars expected to be high, plan to book early and brace for high prices in popular leisure destinations.

If travelers were looking for relief moving forward, the 2023 Global Business Travel Forecast found that worldwide car rental prices are expected to climb 7.3 percent in 2022 and another 6.8 percent in 2023.

Enterprise takes the top spot for service, but its base price of $47 a day is not as competitive as that of its sister company, Alamo. Yet Enterprise, which has 5,800 U.S. locations, gives customers a break on many of the add-on fees that can trip you up once you get to the counter.

While Enterprise has this added advantage towards customers in general, both Budget and National are also great with their customers. The only difference is that their rental cars tend to have more specific customers in mind, while Enterprise is more inclusive, with its extensive car selection.

Enterprise is by far the largest car rental company in the U.S. at just under 44 percent of the total market. The majority of rental car companies can be grouped into three major conglomerates.

First, the company still keeps 60%, which is a huge margin. More importantly, this ownership structure is what has truly fueled Enterprise's success. By setting up such a generous incentive program, Enterprise employees bend over backwards to take care of customers, leading to increased business.

Enterprise owns both National and Alamo. Avis owns Budget, Payless, and Zipcar. Hertz owns Dollar and Thrifty.

While prices have slightly dipped from those highs, they're still higher every month so far in 2022 than before the pandemic. But not all rental car prices are created equal, even if the rental car is otherwise the same.

Most Enterprise drivers don't expect a tip, so it's a pleasant surprise. They should be tipped just like cab drivers.

Does Enterprise charge a cleaning fee? No; however, we expect rental cars to be returned in the same clean condition that they were first rented in. If a vehicle requires excessive cleaning or special cleaning products, a cleaning fee will be applied to your overall rental cost.

Turo is a peer-to-peer car-sharing company. Formerly known as RelayRides, Turo allows car owners to make extra cash by renting out their vehicles, while providing a convenient and quick way to rent a car to those in need of transportation.

In fact, many automakers will buy back rentals at a fixed price within certain time and mileage restraints and sell them as "program cars" on dealer lots. But rental companies also purchase vehicles outright, which they often later sell on their own lots.
